Advanced materials for Interior Design And Architecture Part -1

The market presently is full of innovative materials which and enhance the Interior and Architectural design. These materials carry special characteristics and a different approach to the rational concept of design and materials. Although most of the materials are expensive but the advantage they offer is very good. Let us see some materials along with their properties and uses.

Translucent Concrete

Translucent concrete is a material with light transmission. This is because to optical fibers are embedded in it. The optical fiber is made to go through the complete object we get light patterns on the other surface. Translucent concrete combines the strength of concrete with the properly making light pass through it. You can use is to enhance your interiors or you can make the whole building lighted, more so in countries where direct sunlight is not present for the whole day. This concrete is a revolutionary material.


Sensing tile

Sensing tile is material which lights up when we walk on it. There are several manufacturers of these heat sensitive tiles which are concrete embedded with optical fibers and can respond to shadow and heat of the human body, the light sensors in them make the tiles glow. For example in the night you need to go to the refrigerator, the sensing tile will light up your path sensing your shadow. They can be used on your ceiling so that the lights go on when you are walking on a path. These tiles have numerous functions and many companies manufacturing them. These tiles can be used in Interiors and an interior can become fantastic with them. In the market tiles and there are innumerable choices. Interior designer must use them only in certain areas.


Electrified Wood

Electrified wood is pressed with two integrated conducting layers make electricity flow. It is a 12V metal layer via one connector, and elements (lamps, spotlights, fans etc.) can be connected via another. NO cable needed.

With this wood synthesis is made by combining wood and electricity and Furniture like chairs, tables, lamps and shelves create relationships that was hitherto not possible because cable and other lighting fixtures that were needed may lose their use.




RichLite is made with 70 % recycled paper. The countertops are made by treating paper with a resin, and then baking it to create solid sheets. RichLite was first used in the aerospace, boating, and sports industries as reinforcement for surfaces like fiberglass, but now is available for architectural purposes as well. It is stronger than wood or any material. It comes in many finishes


Self Repairing Cement

This cement is mixed with microcapsules that release a glue-like epoxy resin that will automatically repair any cracks that form in the concrete. In addition this cement will have the ability to regulate heat. Phase-change materials that can absorb or release large amounts of heat have also been included in the ingredients. With this material we would be able to save energy by developing Buildings ,that can control their own temperature, and save money on repairs as well.

Carbon Fiber

Carbon fiber is an extremely strong, lightweight material. It’s five times as strong as steel, two times as stiff, yet weighs about two thirds less.
Carbon fiber is made up of carbon strands that are thinner than human hair. The strands can be woven together, like cloth, and then that can be molded to any shape you might want. In addition to being strong, carbon fiber is also flexible, so it’s the perfect material for construction projects in areas with that are exposed
to hurricanes and tornados.

Transparent Aluminum

Transparent Aluminum is extremely durable crystalline material with excellent optical transparency. It is used in windows, domes, plates, rods and tubes in a wide range of sizes and thicknesses. It is very hard nearly bullet proof it is Available in a wide variety of sizes, shapes and thicknesses Applicable to a wide variety of industries including aerospace, security, defense and Semiconductor, Energy and consumer products


Liquid Granite

Liquid granite has the ability to completely replace cement in concrete. The material is a lightweight and has the same load bearing capacity of cement, but is made of recycled materials.
Liquid granite has none of the environmental impacts that cement and concrete do. It is made up of between 30 and 70 percent recycled material, and uses less than one third of the cement used in precast concrete. This means that it has a greatly reduced carbon footprint.

Finally, liquid granite is astoundingly fire resistant. It can withstand temperatures of up to 1,100 degrees Celsius while still maintaining its structural properties. Unlike concrete it does not explode in high temperatures.
